This week's special: Lucrecia Martel

This Week’s Woman, one of Latin America's Top Film Directors:

Lucrecia Martel

“My love of storytelling comes from oral tradition, the stories from my grandmother and conversations with my mother. The world is full of discussions of condensation, drifts, misunderstanding, repetition. These are the materials I work with. My debt is to these women.” claims Lucrecia Martel, one of the Hispanic world’s top Film Directors.

In this week's post, we offer you a glimpse into her illustrious works.

Lucrecia was born in Argentina, back in December 14 of 1966.

Her passion for writing and directing movies started when she travelled to Buenos Aires, the country's capital, with her father and watched Camila, a movie directed by Maria Luisa Bemberg. Martel was impressed by a woman creator who succeeded in the mainstream industry. From that moment on, she was convinced that cinema was a woman’s job, and this idea stayed with her for years.

She is now considered one of the most critically acclaimed film directors in Spanish-language art cinema. In April 2018, Vogue called her "one of the greatest directors in the world".

Martel made her debut with a feature film called “La Cienaga” or “The Swamp”. The film, like most of her work, is a critique of the bourgeois families in Argentina and Latin America.

In May of 2018, Marvel Studios approached Martel to offer her the director role for Black Widow but she declined because she wanted to be able to direct her own action scenes.

Even though she claims that ideas don't come so often and she doesn't believe is necessary to shoot a film every year, in her 50s, she's still a promising director who will be creating more of her interesting work.
